Description
The Modbus protocol is used by many control manufacturers. The cable between the LC module and the other device must be made to match the manufacturer’s serial port connection. The connector pin-out should be available in the manufacturer’s documentation. Two versions of Personality modules are available for the LC module: • Group 1 module (Westinghouse part number 1C31169G01) — Provides an RS-232 electrical interface — Appropriate for installations where the distance between the LC card and the other Modbus speaking device is 50 feet (15 meters) or less. • Group 2 module (Westinghouse part number 1C31169G02) — Provides an RS-422/RS-485 electrical interface — Appropriate for distances up to 4000 feet (1220 meters). The field connection to the LC module can be made either at the nine pin J2 connector of the personality module or at the terminal block of the base unit. It is common for RS-422 and RS-485 communication, because the cable length is typically longer, for the connection to be made as field wiring rather than as a premanufactured cable. The terminal block connection is convenient for theses cases.
